Renewing Boulder's carbon tax is essential if the city is to keep making progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but a potential county sustainability tax could make it harder to get voters to say yes in November, Boulder City Council members said Tuesday.

Boulder's Naropa University has chosen a familiar face to be its next president: Charles G. Lief, chairman of the school's board, will take the helm in August. Lief -- a nonprofit executive, entrepreneur and lawyer -- has deep roots with the Buddhist-inspired university, helping found it in 1974.

Erie's Red Hawk Elementary wins $25,000 fitness grant

ERIE -- Red Hawk Elementary School has been awarded a $25,000 grant for its fitness program. The school is one of nine winners of the national Active Schools Acceleration Project's Innovation Competition, which First Lady Michelle Obama and ChildObesity180 launched in February.

Colorado Horse Rescue suspends prairie dog extermination on Boulder County property

Hygiene's Colorado Horse Rescue has suspended an effort to exterminate prairie dogs on its land until Boulder County can approve a new plan by the nonprofit organization for revegetating about 35 acres of its property.

Trader Joe's plans call for less parking at old Applebee's site in Boulder

Trader Joe's planned store at Boulder's Twenty Ninth Street mall will be more than twice the size of the former Applebee's restaurant it's replacing, but will have at least 14 fewer parking spaces, according to initial site plans the grocer filed with the city.

Suspect in burglary of Boulder County deputy charged with stealing from 2nd deputy

A Denver man accused of stealing handguns, badges and computer equipment from the home of a Boulder County sheriff's deputy whom he was in a relationship with is now being charged in the 2010 burglary of another Boulder deputy he also was in a relationship with, according to court records.

Erie mothers, children descend on Encana headquarters with anti-fracking petition

Boulder's high temperature reaches 89, breaking 80-year-old record by 1 degree

The high temperature in Boulder this afternoon peaked at 89 degrees, just barely breaking the previous record of 88 set in 1932, according to local meteorologist Matt Kelsch. Wednesday, though, will see temperatures top out in the mid-70s.

CU-Boulder police: Three students arrested in bike theft case

Police arrested Thomas Langsfeld, 21, Daniel Pittenger, 19, and Claire Tabolt, 23, on suspicion of possession of burglary tools -- a class five felony -- and criminal mischief. Langsfeld also faces charges of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
